Dighton Police Department Press Release
From the desk of Police Chief Robert L. MacDonald:
At approximately 6:40pm tonight, the Dighton Police Department responded to 2245 Wheeler Street after receiving a 911 call that a male party was violently attempting to gain entry into the home of a family member. According to the female caller, the male party crashed his car into the cars in the driveway and was now trying to get into their home. While officers were en route, dispatch stayed on the line with the frantic caller who indicated that the rear glass slider had just been shattered with a large rock and that the male party, who she identified as her estranged brother, was coming into the home. Her husband then shot the male party in the abdomen.
As officers arrived, they found Ronald Whitmore, Jr., 46, of Bristol, NH, in a backyard pool. Officers removed the party from the pool, placed him into custody and began treating the wound as EMS personnel were en route. Whitmore was subsequently transported to Rhode Island Hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound. The investigation is ongoing as DPD and the Massachusetts State Police are collaborating to process the crime scene and interview all parties involved.
Whitmore will be charged with operating to endanger, breaking and entering daytime for a felony, home invasion, and assault with a deadly weapon; to wit cobblestone. No charges are being filed against the homeowner at this time.
